When a phase of life ends—whether expected or unexpected—we can feel unsteady, searching for solid footing. Sometimes this follows a move, a new career, becoming a parent, the end of a relationship, retirement, or letting go of a long-held role.

What many transitions have in common is that our identity, routine, and support system can feel MIA, which can be deeply unsettling. Transitions may also impact how we spend our time, how we connect with others, and what we’re looking forward to. It’s often during these moments we find ourselves asking, Who am I if I’m no longer that role, that partner, that caregiver, or that version of myself?

Over time, both personally and professionally, I’ve come to understand how much we need support and human connection during times of uncertainty.

It was during the birth of my first child that I came to truly understand, on a personal level, the power of human connection. After nearly 24 hours of labor, I was exhausted, in pain, and increasingly afraid. Despite a room full of people there to support me, I felt profoundly alone. As the situation stretched on and my fear grew, I remember searching my doctor’s eyes. It wasn’t until I was able to hold her gaze that I began to feel grounded enough to cope.

Looking back, I see that there was little anyone there could have done to change my situation, but what did help was human connection. That moment of being seen allowed me to steady myself and move forward.

That experience—and the recognition that life transitions are often when we need support the most—led me to train as a doula and later as a hospice volunteer. It also clarified something essential for me: meaning in my life comes from supporting others as they navigate moments of change. Over time, that’s taken different forms, including work as a personal historian and, for the past 10+ years, as a therapist and life coach.

At the heart of what I do is a simple belief: with support and grounding, even difficult transitions can feel more manageable and may ultimately lead us toward greater clarity and confidence.
